It has long been accepted by many people that talent and inspiration go hand-in-glove. I think that you can add understanding and subconscious too. They all seem to be linked in the creative process.
Money or profits have a limited ability to motivate people. We are motivated in the long run if there is purpose in our life. We want to belong also and be part of a bigger community. We want to contribute to others. We want to find meaning in life. In his theories of motivation, Maslow called it self-actualisation. There must be a purpose bigger than ourselves in life.
What if the artists simply saw that beauty that could be accomplished, and shrugged their shoulders and moved on? The world would be a sadder place without those beautiful works of art.
So I spent the week waiting for name inspiration. This got me thinking about inspiration in general and wondering how many sit around and wait for Browse new tips to hit. You see, that’s something I can’t do. While I was waiting for the name to make itself known, I continued to work on the other images I’m preparing for the gallery. I continued to work on the description that was to accompany each photo. I continued to work on a variety of things that sit patiently in my creative magic box.
When people find motivation first, it is because they have found something they desperately want to work at every day. Their motivation grows and makes them successful at the job they are performing. They feel productive and thus, happiness follows.
As you can see, AF motivation is a great self defense mechanism and people usually do it consciously or unconsciously (as the unconscious mind tries to protect you from harm). However, the biggest problem of AF motivations is that it doesn’t lead you any where but a way from the problem. Using the example of the open fire again, the AF motivation was really just to stay away from the fire. Once you’re safe from the fire, there is no more motivation to do anything else.
This is not to take anything away from talented people – it is a talent to be able to do this and some can obviously do it better than others. Talent can also be increased by practice. That is for sure, but geniuses are born, not self-made.
